Ruth Dean for AGRC President

11/1/2016

PictureRuth Dean
Note: Following is Ruth Dean’s campaign speech. Please select “Read More” for the balance of the speech presented at the recent General Meeting. It is followed by an expanded Position Statement.

My name is Ruth Dean and I am running for President of AGRC. Many of you know me from the bi-weekly Food Bank where I have volunteered for 4 years as the check-in person. I also am responsible for AGRC support to the Food Bank. This includes locating and managing volunteer support and arranging for in-home delivery to residents who are unable to come in person. Currently, I am the vice-president of AGRC and the team leader for the six building representatives.

In addition, I lead the Social Hour Squad as we present the monthly Social to recognize the people with birthdays during the month with cake and ice cream from our campus managers, Dave and Pam. This event also provides a way for new residents to meet their neighbors.

AGRC is a social organization whose mission is to provide a welcoming environment and opportunities for friendship, recreation, wellness, and education, thus empowering residents to continue an active and independent lifestyle within the Community.  If elected, my administration will return the focus of the organization on the social elements of Arrowhead Gardens life, while continuing its outstanding wellness and educational activities.

I recognize that some residents have concerns about landlord/tenant issues and I respect their desire to have these resolved. The current president has formed a second resident-based organization, STT--SHAG Tenants Together--that specifically addresses these important issues. That organization encompasses all the SHAG facilities and the current AGRC president serves as the president of that organization. If elected, I would ensure that all landlord/tenant issues are directed to STT for resolution.

Laura Ramsey for AGRC Secretary

11/1/2016

My name is Laura Ramsey and I am running for the position of  Secretary. As many of you know, I am one of the staff writers for our newsletter, the Straight Arrow News.

Although I’m running unopposed, I want to share with you a vision I have of the role of  Secretary. I’ve been here over 4 years and there is a lot history and creative ideas that are generated in the various committees. At the present time, we have no way to document that information--write it down--somewhere--for future committee members to use.

I have a simple, but effective way of helping committees keep a record of what works, and or how it might be done better. Having this information will mean that those people who volunteer to work on a committee sometime in the future won’t have to start from zero.

So, please vote for me and, even if you don’t, you’re stuck with me to produce the minutes of the Executive Board meetings and the General Membership meetings. Norma has set a great example of how to be your AGRC Secretary. I’m just going to follow her in her able footsteps.

Jackie Terrell for AGRC Treasurer

10/29/2016

PictureJackie Terrell
My name is Jackie Terrell and I am running for AGRC Treasurer. I have lived here since 2010 and was active in the creation of AGRC. I opened its first bank account when the previous Treasurer, Corrine Andrews, and I got worried about keeping what little money we had in our sock drawer.

My financial experience includes 5 years as the On-Site Manager of a Public Storage facility of 1,400 units that generated between $75 and $80 thousand dollars per month. Because I was the only African-American manager within the then-New-York-to-Detroit district, my accounts were audited constantly. Without exception, during my 5 years, the audit of my accounts was accurate to the penny, literally. I have the demonstrated experience and skill to handle the AGRC accounts.

I am running for Treasurer because I am concerned about the lack of transparency. We are unable to determine the accuracy of the current Treasurer’s handwritten reports. Recently, a long-overdue audit was finally conducted and the Treasurer, not the Audit Committee chairperson, reported the findings verbally. There was no supporting information from the Audit Committee, whose credentials were never shared with the membership.

I recently distributed a detailed discussion of what specific problems I see and how I propose to correct them. Thank you for taking the time to consider the material I have shared. I ask for your vote as Treasurer so I can resolve these serious shortcomings.
