Camp Second Chance FACT SHEET
Camp Second Chance: Sanctuary
Some people arrive at Camp Second Chance utterly destitute, with only the clothes on their back and not a dime in their pocket. CSC provides these people with the fundamentals of stability – bedding and clothes, a safe place to sleep, basic sanitation and hygiene, and access to food. Working together as a team, the camp leadership, professional case managers, and community volunteers help people calm down from the constant crisis of life on the street, so they can focus on addressing their challenges. The camp is a source of safety, sanctuary, respite, and friendship, creating the foundation from which campers can rebuild their lives.

LIHI SupportLow Income Housing Institute provides services and logistics support to Camp Second Chance on annual contracts with City of Seattle. The Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) is a state-wide nonprofit based in Seattle. For 28 years it has been providing innovative solutions to the housing and homelessness crisis. LIHI contracts with the City of Seattle to provide administration, resources and case managers at city sanctioned encampments. LIHI is one of the largest providers of tiny houses in the nation due to Seattle's policy of Tiny House Villages: more than 300 tiny houses in nine sanctioned villages have already housed thousands of singles and couples. In the last three years, LIHI social workers have helped hundreds of people obtain employment, healthcare and housing, moving 171 people from tiny houses to long-term housing in 2018. HistoryIn April of 2016, a group of campers separated from Tent City 3 to form their own Tent City, naming themselves Camp Second Chance. Self-declared clean and sober and well-disciplined in the rules and dynamics of what it takes to run a strong community, this group landed at Riverton Park Methodist Church for over three months. In the fall they set out to find their own site, to establish a self-sufficient and independent camp. They landed at the Myers Way parcel, developed a partnership with a non-profit to represent them (Patacara Community Services), and the city of Seattle sanctioned their camp at Myers Way (spring 2017). In the fall of 2017, Patacara and Camp Second Chance parted ways. At that time, LIHI picked up the contract to provide administrative and case management. In the spring of 2018, the community overwhelmingly voted to extend the contract for the camp for another year and the city obliged. In March 2019, their permit is set to expire for the Myers Way location. CampSecondChance.org |
