Apply for Seattle Fresh Bucks
The Fresh Bucks Public Lottery Application opens Monday October 11, 2021 at 9:00 a.m.
Eligible Seattle residents can apply to receive monthly (food credit) benefits in 2022.
For more information, visit https://www.seattlefreshbucks.org/
And
Seattle’s Fresh Bucks Program Launches Electronic Benefits to Offer a More Equitable Shopping Experience

About Fresh Bucks: Fresh Bucks is a healthy food program that helps Seattle residents afford the fruits and vegetables they need to thrive. Fresh Bucks is funded by the City of Seattle, including Seattle’s Sweetened Beverage Tax (SBT). The SBT promotes public health by reducing the sales and consumption of sugary drinks and investing the tax revenue in healthy food programs designed to reach communities most impacted by food insecurity.

Submit A Public Lottery Application (Link here: Application)
The Public Lottery application opens on October 11, 2021 at 9:00 a.m.
Between October 11, 2021 at 9:00 a.m. and October 29, 2021 at 11:59 p.m., you can apply online or over the phone for Fresh Bucks benefits. Benefits can be spent on fruit and vegetable purchases at participating Seattle retailers in 2022. (See Where to shop below)
All eligible, unduplicated applications received within the Public Lottery application period will be entered into a public lottery. Your chances of being selected in the lottery are the same whether you apply online or over the phone.

October 11–29, 2021 Public Lottery Application Period
December 2021 All Applicants Notified of Applicant Status

To Submit an Application, You Need the Following Information:
  • Number of people in your household
  • Total household income
  • Current home address
  • Your voucher ID number (for current Fresh Bucks customers only)
Am I Eligible?
  • Anyone can apply to receive Fresh Bucks benefits.
  • When you submit an application, you will receive an instant response letting you know if you are eligible.
  • You are Eligible for Fresh Bucks Benefits if:
  • You live within the Seattle city limits (check here) and
  • Your household income is at or below 80% Area Median Income (AMI).
Number in household > 80% AMI
1 > $63,350
2 > $72,400
3 > $81,450
4 >  $90,500

Public Lottery Application
Recognizing that not all eligible households are served through our network of community-based enrollment partners, we also offer a public lottery application. All eligible, unduplicated applications received within the public lottery application period are entered into a computer-generated randomized selection process led by a third party. Each applicant is assigned an “unfiltered” randomized ranking between 1 and the total number of applicants. (For example, in a lottery with 10,000 applicants, each applicant is randomly assigned a number between 1 and 10,000.) We enroll Public Lottery applicants in order of randomized ranking as available budget allows.

SEATTLE HISTORY
Seattle’s Forgotten Battle
By David Buerge - March 20, 2021
https://www.postalley.org/2021/03/20/seattles-forgotten-battle/
As Coll Thrush writes in Native Seattle: Histories From The Crossing Over Place,
“Every American city is built on Indian land, but few advertise it like Seattle.”
City residents succeeded in making the Duwamish landless, and, as a legal result, unrecognized by the federal government, even though they were the first signatories to the Treaty of Point Elliott, and their Duwamish Chief, Seattle was the primary native spokesman at the treaty council.

Black History Month: Black and Tan Hall & Clubs
The term “black and tan” originated in Harlem to identify clubs where patrons of all races were welcome despite segregation laws. The original Black and Tan Club in Seattle has an extensive history. The popular music venue at 12th and Jackson is said to have opened in the early 1920s and despite name and ownership changes over the years, operated for nearly five decades.

The likelihood of an earthquake under magnitude 8.0 — smaller, but still potentially devastating to the region — in the next 50 years is around 40%.

Starting March 11, 2021, ShakeAlert®-powered earthquake early warning alerts will be available for delivery directly to wireless devices in Oregon. In May 2021, Washington state will follow suit and complete the ShakeAlert public alerting rollout across the entire West Coast. California enabled ShakeAlert-powered alerts in October 2019.

Seattle PI
New 'ShakeAlert' earthquake warning system to launch in Washington in May; drill next week
The system, created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Advanced National Seismic System (ADNN), is a network of sensors that can detect seismic shaking and provide information such as the magnitude, location and expected duration to partners who will then distribute it via cell phone, radio, internet and television alert to residents.
While residents drop, hold and cover during the shaking, the alerts can also initiate other protective actions such as stopping trains to prevent derailments, halting surgeries at hospitals and shutting off water valves to protect infrastructures.
Seismologists with the USGS said there is a 15% chance the Evergreen State will be rattled by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake within the next 50 years.

02/08/2021 CLASSIC MOVIES: The Great Dictator - Still Relevant
By the time Charlie Chaplin made The Great Dictator, he had long despised the Nazis, and vice versa. A German propaganda film denounced him as one of "the foreign Jews who come to Germany" – never mind that he wasn't Jewish – while the US press nicknamed him "The 20th-Century Moses" because he funded the escape of thousands of Jewish refugees. When he started work on the film initially titled "The Dictator", he was "a man on a mission", says Louvish. "Some of his contemporaries, like Laurel and Hardy, just wanted to make funny movies and make money. But Chaplin was very serious about what he wanted to say. The Great Dictator wasn't just a film. It really was something that was required."
